So i started a new export of the physical machine but then into a vmware workstation image. I ran into a problem tho, at booting the vm i got the message that ntloader was compressed and thus i couldnt get passed that. I used the tool vcenter converter standalone (thats the tool thierry mentions).

This machine runs Windows 2000 pro SP4 (not server). Recently i made a P2V backup from a critical machine here.

L though this test didn't work out right, this weekend I am going to try againĪs we a charity, open source or free apps are ideal. In short, I really want to do this 'bare metal' working with an exact clone of the disk done with ghost onto a VM and find a way of changing the drivers to make it boot successfully. This machine has a particular weird configuration of RAID disks, which I am not comfortable interfering with. I absolutely do not want to install anything or change the configuration of the original server and only work with a back up. What good P2V tools will help me with this? Some of the free tools like VMware does I have seen available are all about doing this online requiring some kind of app put on the server to be converted. I can't boot the server in safe mode either. I have tried numerous methods to slipstream SP4 onto Windows 2000 and the test VM I made to test the ISO doesn't work it always crashes. I have tried doing a repair install of Win2000 server with an original CD, this didnt work, probably as the Cd has no Service Packs and this unit runs SP4. The newly created just BSODs when booting, so I have used a Bart PE CD with P2V tools, these didn't work. I took the server offline and made a copy with it with Ghost onto a an extra SATA disk and copy the Ghost files and put them onto a machine.

The hardware it runs on has a possible failing disk in the RAID array and want to get it backed up and migrated to a VM as soon as possible.Īs this can't be done in business hours, last weekend I did a test run. I am trying to virtualise a server running Windows 2000 SP4 and SAP.
